Jeffrey Covington arrest shows what's easily available on Facebook

Detectives detailed some of their investigatory methods in the lengthy arrest warrant affidavit for Jeffrey Covington.

Some of that included Facebook posts that were open to the public. Detectives were able to track down Covington's alleged Facebook profile under the name "Nephew Jeff" and look back at posts.

Covington is the man in the camouflage jacket, according to the warrant. The post is dated from earlier this year. The other individual holding what appears to be a revolver is a minor known to police and is mentioned in the warrant. Below is another screenshot from the other individual's account. It is dated a little more than a week after the homicide.

Below is another screenshot from the Nephew Jeff Facebook account mentioned in the warrant. Covington is an alleged member of the R-2 gang.

Tashaun Fair sentenced for attempted robbery

Tashaun Fair
Tashaun Fair, who was accused of killing Mitchell Dubey, but was ultimately acquitted, was recently found guilty for conspiracy to commit robbery.

Fair plead guilty to criminal possession of a firearm and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery on April 3. The charge stemmed from an October 2013 incident.

He was sentenced to 12 years of jail, suspended after six years with probation for three years for the conspiracy charge and five years for the firearm charge.

He has been in the custody of the Department of Correction since Oct. 7, which is when he was arrested for the robbery incident. His maximum release date is Oct. 7, 2019.

The prosecution faced an uphill battle with the Dubey case, especially after the state's key witness backed down from a previous alleged story. Fair had a previous felony conviction for third-degree robbery from a 2011 case.

Comment on Torrence Gamble's death

I found this interesting comment on the main article about Torrence Gamble Jr.'s funeral service. Many people will say that decades ago problems were at worst solved with fists and then everyone went home after. Police are still investigating leads on Gamble's death and the motive behind his shooting.

"As I drove past the memorial yesterday I couldn't help thinking how senseless this was. Was he being robbed? What could a 16 year old kid have that you need that badly, did he say something to you in school that day? If you're that mad, that's what your fists are for ONLY after you talk or at least try to talk to him and make sure you heard right. How are you going to fix it if you find out tomorrow he wasn't even talking about you? Guns are way too final. When they find you (and Esserman's guys have been doing a good job lately) you're going to have a whole different attitude than you have right now."

New Haven homicide victim connections

RICH SCINTO - NEW HAVEN REGISTER Mourners take part
in a vigil Friday night in New Haven
following the slaying of a city teenager Thursday night.
There have been a couple of connections this year between homicide victims.

That in itself isn't too odd, as studies have shown one is more likely to become a victim of a homicide if he/she knows other homicide victims. The fewer degrees of separation, the higher the chance of becoming a victim.

New Haven is also a small city where many residents are multi-generational New Haveners. Some say that everybody knows everybody in the city one way or another and it's far often less than five degrees of separation.

Here are some of the connections between some of the homicides this year. There have been no arrests so far in any of the mentioned cases:

-Torrence Gamble attended the funeral for homicide victim Taijhon Washington on Wednesday, April 2. Gamble attended Riverside Academy; he and around 20 others from the school attended Washington's funeral, according to the New Haven Independent. Gamble seeked help the day prior to getting shot through Street Outreach Worker Doug Bethea.

-Durell Patrick Law's son is the nephew of Taijhon Washington.

-Going back, Washington is related to homicide victims Dallas Boomer and Thomas “TJ” Mozell.

Connections to those doing the good work

It's been bizarre that many of the 2014 homicide victims are closely related to several people in the community who are working hard to prevent violence.

-Law is related through marriage to Pastor Troy McNulty, who frequently goes to homicide, shooting and other violent crime scenes to offer support and love to the victim's family.

-Gamble is the nephew of Nakia Dawson, who founded the Bereavement Care Network to help support families after they lose a loved one, particularly to gun violence.

-Kyle Brown-Edwards is a cousin of Officer Jillian Knox, victim services coordinator for the New Haven Police Department. Edwards lost his brother to a murder in 1999.

Torrence Gamble, of Henry Street, was found in front of 78 Daggett St. at about 9:40 p.m. suffering from a gunshot to the head. He was taken to the hospital and rushed into surgery. Gamble died at 3:15 a.m., police spokesman Officer David Hartman said.

Gamble is the city’s sixth homicide victim of 2014. He was a student at Riverside Academy, which is about a mile away from the shooting site.

There have been two homicides in the Hill North police district this year. The district encompasses the area within Ella T Grasso Boulevard, Legion Avenue, Columbus Avenue  and Church Street South. There was only one shooting all of 2012 in the district.

Police are still trying to piece together what happened Thursday night and ask anyone with information to call them at 203-946-6304.
