Lisa Craggett had been operating on seven hours of sleep since Friday night when her son Jacob Craggett, 15, was shot and killed and her other son Joshua Craggett was critically wounded.

She got back from visiting Joshua at Yale-New Haven Hospital, which is around the corner from Friday night's shooting scene and near her mother and sister's house Tuesday afternoon. She was eager to tell Jacob's story.

She said she would recall Jacob Craggett as an average 15-year-old who was heavily interested in football and someone who his friends could count on as a mentor when they needed advice. He played defensive tackle at Hillhouse High School.

Jacob Craggett's funeral is Saturday August 16 at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church at 425 Newhall Street in Hamden, just over the New Haven border. Viewing will take place between 9 and 11 a.m. with the funeral to follow from approximately 11 to 1 p.m.

Lisa Craggett urged anyone with information about the shooting to call police, even if they think the information is just rumor or hearsay. Its up to the detectives to sort out truth from fiction, she said. The number for detectives is 203-946-6316.

Friday night's shooting stirred up memories of when Jacob and Joshua's cousin Jason Craggett, 22, was shot and killed at the front step of the family home in 2004.

Brian Gibson, 23, was shot on South Genesee Street during a hot summer afternoon.

Errol Marshal, 19, was found on the front porch of 295 Division St. around 10:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. Courtney Jackson, 25, of New Haven, was found at 169 Shelton Ave. with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, which he survived.

Jahmal Fulcher, 19, was arrested and charged with the murder of Gibson. Fulcher was developed as a suspect early on in the investigation. Police previously said that they believed a disagreement between the two led to the shooting.
Some of that included Facebook posts that were open to the public. Detectives were able to track down Covington's alleged Facebook profile under the name "Nephew Jeff" and look back at posts.
The prosecution faced an uphill battle with the Dubey case, especially after the state's key witness backed down from a previous alleged story. Fair had a previous felony conviction for third-degree robbery from a 2011 case.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01010459274597988050noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7618229495977692941.post-74872999835976836712014-04-11T13:21:00.002-04:002014-04-11T13:21:43.009-04:00Comment on Torrence Gamble's deathI found this interesting comment on the main article about Torrence Gamble Jr.'s funeral service. Many people will say that decades ago problems were at worst solved with fists and then everyone went home after. Police are still investigating leads on Gamble's death and the motive behind his shooting.
"As I drove past the memorial yesterday I couldn't help thinking how senseless this was. Was he being robbed? What could a 16 year old kid have that you need that badly, did he say something to you in school that day? If you're that mad, that's what your fists are for ONLY after you talk or at least try to talk to him and make sure you heard right. How are you going to fix it if you find out tomorrow he wasn't even talking about you? Guns are way too final. When they find you (and Esserman's guys have been doing a good job lately) you're going to have a whole different attitude than you have right now."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01010459274597988050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7618229495977692941.post-68696963186440982452014-04-11T12:36:00.004-04:002014-04-11T12:36:38.143-04:00Funeral service for Torrence Gamble Jr.

There have been a couple of connections this year between homicide victims.

That in itself isn't too odd, as studies have shown one is more likely to become a victim of a homicide if he/she knows other homicide victims. The fewer degrees of separation, the higher the chance of becoming a victim.

New Haven is also a small city where many residents are multi-generational New Haveners. Some say that everybody knows everybody in the city one way or another and it's far often less than five degrees of separation.

Here are some of the connections between some of the homicides this year. There have been no arrests so far in any of the mentioned cases:

-Torrence Gamble attended the funeral for homicide victim Taijhon Washington on Wednesday, April 2. Gamble attended Riverside Academy; he and around 20 others from the school attended Washington's funeral, according to the New Haven Independent. Gamble seeked help the day prior to getting shot through Street Outreach Worker Doug Bethea.

-Durell Patrick Law's son is the nephew of Taijhon Washington.

-Going back, Washington is related to homicide victims Dallas Boomer and Thomas “TJ” Mozell.

Connections to those doing the good work

It's been bizarre that many of the 2014 homicide victims are closely related to several people in the community who are working hard to prevent violence.

-Law is related through marriage to Pastor Troy McNulty, who frequently goes to homicide, shooting and other violent crime scenes to offer support and love to the victim's family.

-Gamble is the nephew of Nakia Dawson, who founded the Bereavement Care Network to help support families after they lose a loved one, particularly to gun violence.

-Kyle Brown-Edwards is a cousin of Officer Jillian Knox, victim services coordinator for the New Haven Police Department. Edwards lost his brother to a murder in 1999.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01010459274597988050noreply@blogger.com0
